Bangkok Nightlife
Bangkok's
legendary status as a nightime haven is now firmly established
in the 21st Century, offering an even greater range of exciting
places and venues to visit, which
cater to all tastes and budgets.
With the introduction of the modern BTS Skytrain, accessibility
is now easier and most of the popular areas are within easy
reach and distance.
Apart
from the well known areas of Patpong and Soi Comboy, which
are famous for girls and bars, there is so much more to see
in Bangkok.
To begin your evening you may wish to take a nice relaxing
dinner cruise on the Chao Phya river in an old teak rice barge,
or take an interesting walk around Pramane Ground where you
can see the gold spires of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Keow
glittering at night.
One of must see events is Thai Boxing, or "Muay Thai",
which is staged at Lumpini Stadium.
If
pulsating music is your scene, why not try the throbbing nightclubs
such as Lucifers and The Talisman. Royal City Avenue is actually
a whole street of huge clubs. The range of pubs and clubs
available is quite staggering, Silom Soi 4 being one area.
English and Irish pubs are also very popular, such as The
Bull's Head and Shenaningan's, and they all have a very good
atmosphere and serve traditional and authentic cuisine.
Live music is available at many different establishments,
including jazz and blues at the old Saxophone Pub at Victory
Monument, or Brown Sugar, which is a news acid jazz lounge.
There are also plenty of live bands from South American such
as Le Havana, and talented Filipino bands.
Thai Boxing
This
is both a sport and means of self defense. Contestants are
allowed to use almost any part of their body: feet, elbows,
legs, knees, and shoulders, are all weapons. The playing of
traditional music during bouts makes for even greater excitement.
The two main venues in Bangkok for viewing the Thai boxing
are
Ratchadamnoen Stadium
On Ratchadamnoen Nok Road, it is open every Monday and Wednesday
at 6.00 p.m, Thursday at 5.00 and 9.00 p.m, and Sunday at
4.00 and 8.00 p.m.
Lumphini Stadium
On Rama IV Road, it is open every Tuesday and Friday at 6.00
p.m, and Saturday at 5.00 p.m.
International visitors who wish to learn Thai boxing can contact
the Muay Thai Institute, 336/932 Prachathipat, Thanyaaburi,
Pathum Thani (Tel: (02) 9920096-9).
