General Information

Introduction

Surat Thani

is southern Thailand's largest province, covers some 12,800 square kilometres, and has an extensive coastline lapped by Thai Gulf waters. The provincial capital is 685 kilometres south of Bangkok. Surat Thani boasts some of Thailand's loveliest islands namely the Penang-sized Ko Samui, Thailand's third largest island, palm-fringed jewel of a sparkling archipelago that includes the stunning 250-square-kilometre Ang Thong Marine National Park.

Koh Tao

little more than 21 km², is located about 70 km east of the coastline between Suratthani and Chumphon, in the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Tao means Turtle Island, because in the past the waters in the area had been rich with sea turtles, nowadays they have mostly moved on to other breeding grounds. Initially the island was not inhabited, there was only the occasional fisherman from the neighbouring islands, looking for shelter in a storm or just taking a break before continuing his tiresome journey.

Ko Pha Ngan
is the nearest island to Samui. Boats can be readily hired for the trip. The beaches are good and there are also several scenic waterfalls ,but while there is some budget accommodation, the island is much less developed than Samui. Close by and accessible on day trips by boat are two other smaller, uninhabited islands where beautiful bays with colorful coral formations offer excellent conditions for snorkeling. A more adventurous full-day excursion can be made to Ang Thong Marine Park, a group of 40 islands northwest of Samui. Here you will see spectacular limestone formations, caves, blue lagoons and amazingly beautiful beaches. At Ko Wua Ta Lap, where the park headquarters are located, there are bungalows for rent. Organized daily tours to Ang Thong are available from travel agents in Na Thon, on Samui.

Khao Sok

It is located on km.109 from Surat township area on Highway No. 401. A verdant forest-covered hill national park, with an area of some 161,000 acres. Many kinds of rare wildlife are still to be found. With an atmosphere of peacefulness and restfulness, one can trek along the trails made to the adventure.
